Jocelyn

I checked myself over in the mirror before getting out of the car.

There were bags under my slightly swollen eyes.

I had been awakened early this morning by Taylor. Apparently, Ethan told her about my car predicament, and she happened to have a spare car I could borrow. She came over bright and early to drop off the keys before leaving in another car, since I wouldn't see her today—her day off.

I didn’t want to think about how conveniently everything had worked out, and I didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth, so to speak.

I probably got no more than three or four hours of sleep last night, and I was mostly running on coffee right now.

At the rate I was going, it would be better to fill an IV line of caffeine and pump me up.

I was just so tired.

I’d thought working with Ethan would give me the chance to just tell him about what I’d done and leave it at that.

I never really thought about what his reaction would be once he knew, because I didn’t let myself think that far ahead.

What I didn’t count on was this.

What I didn’t count on was for him to feel the same way I felt, for him to tell me he didn’t want to fight this anymore—and if I was being honest with myself, I didn’t want to fight either.

But now I was stuck in a situation I didn’t see ending with happily ever after

I didn’t see him forgiving me, and the scary part about this was I could have so easily seen a future for me and Ethan had this not been the case.

I closed my eyes and leaned my head against the steering wheel.

I fucking wished we hadn’t met five years ago.

I never thought I would come to regret that night, but I did now, only because it had robbed me of a chance with him before we even started, and I didn’t know what to do.

A knock on my window had me jumping in my seat and I looked up to see Liam standing there, an expressionless look on his face.

I waved at him from inside the car, feeling like the biggest dork in the world when he arched up one eyebrow at me, his lips twitching with the threat of a smile.

Unbuckling my seatbelt, I made a motion with my hand for him to move back before I opened the door and got out.

“Hey,” I said.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I frowned. Then I realized he’d just seen me with my head against the steering wheel.

“I’m fine,” I said. “Just a little tired.”

His eyes roamed over my face. “Did you not sleep last night?” he asked, his voice gruff.

Perhaps it was the sleep deprivation, but for some reason, his question annoyed me. “I sleep just fine, thank you very much.”

Another lip twitch, and I wondered when I had become such an amusement to so many people. I glared at him.

“Ah, don’t look at me like that. I’m not laughing at you, I promise.
